Messages From:

The Co-Presidents of the P.S. 175 Q Parent's Association

Dear PS 175 Families:

It is very sad to be writing our last letter for Pen and Ink. We will be sorry to leave this special place with all the terrific people in it. The administration, teachers, staff, students and parents at PS 175 are an outstanding group of people. It has been our pleasure to work with you. Our years spent volunteering at PS 175 have given us heartfelt memories we will always cherish.

We would like to thank all the parents who have given so much of their time to help the Parents Association become the exceptional organization that it is today. Your efforts on behalf of the children are generous and very much appreciated. A very big THANK YOU goes to the PA officers who have supported us, worked with us and made these years volunteering at PS 175 so worthwhile. Congratulations to the newly elected Parents Association officers. We wish you the best of luck as you continue great work for the children of PS 175.

Our Parents Association is vital to the school community. We are proud to have contributed a new playground, and a working garden, which not only give our children exceptional outdoor spaces for recreation, but have also helped beautify the look of PS 175. Our Halloween parties always held on Halloween Eve, have given hundreds of our children a safe place to celebrate. It is very important to remember that the Parents Association's fundraising and all of our volunteer efforts go directly to benefit the children of PS 175. Please remember to get involved in your child's school experience. Decisions are made by those who show up! Come to PA meetings, volunteer to chair a committee or volunteer to be a member of a committee. Any involvement helps the school's environment.

CONGRATULATIONS to the graduating class of 2003. You should be very proud of all your accomplishments. We wish you the best of everything that the world has to offer.

With love and wishes for a wonderful summer,
Jennie Badler, Jan Polikoff and Barbara Dinas

Our Principal

Dear Parents,

With the school year drawing to a close, it’s time to take a moment and reflect upon the many events of 2002–2003. The school named a new principal. This is an important occasion in any building. Saying “good-bye” to Mrs. Schulson was a difficult task for us all. However, the transition went smoothly and, for the most part, painlessly. I thank all of you for your help.

The school also welcomed a new interim acting assistant principal, Mrs. Patricia Cooper. Her addition to our staff proved to an exciting and important step in moving on in this new world called the New York City Department of Education. We are lucky to have her.

Apart from these changes, the year provided an opportunity for expanded Shakespeare in grades 4 and 5, a revamping of our Student Council, a new evening event called “Story Night Pajama Party” for grades K–2 and the movement to J.H.S. 157 for the fifth grade closing exercises. Old favorites like Acts of Kindness Week, the second grade puppet show, the Science Olympiad and school picture day came and went successfully as the year progressed.

All in all, this was a very good year for the children, parents and staff. May I wish a wonderful summer vacation to everyone so that we return in September renewed and ready to make 2003–2004 our best year yet.

Sincerely,
Linda Green
Principal

Our Assistant Principal

Dear Pen and Ink Readers,

This is my letter of appreciation to Mrs. Linda Green, our principal, the staff, children and family members of P. S. 175 Queens, The Lynn Gross Discovery School. It has been a wonderful and monumental first year for me serving as your Interim Acting Assistant Principal.

I observed the total learning community. I watched the children grow taller and stronger in body, mind and spirit. Classroom teachers planned and executed innovative lessons that motivated students to model habits of excellence. The Student Council members are responsible citizens who maintained a high level of enthusiasm and positive energy. The Parents Association communicated each family member’s needs, wants and resolved conflict in the children’s best interest. The Parents Association conducted numerous fundraising activities.

I attended various school-based, district-based and city- wide meetings. The meeting topics included City/State Standardized Test, Teachers College Reading/Writing Project, Executive Leadership, Professional Development, and Parents Association Nights. I look forward to participating in future school events: “Acts of Kindness,” Senior Activities, and “Story Night Pajama Party.”

As you plan summer activities with your family may I suggest you attend activities sponsored by the Museum of Modern Art? The website is:

familyprograms@moma.org

Until our next issue of Pen and Ink, enjoy life as we share the good times and support each other through the rough times.

Fondly,
Patricia A. Cooper
I. A. Assistant Principal

Pre-K

The Pre-K children have been enjoying the sights and sounds of spring. We all enjoyed watching our caterpillars make their cocoons and then turn into butterflies. We loved observing them fly away when we let them go!

We have been going on many wonderful trips like the Queens Zoo, Alley Pond Environmental Center and Green Meadows Farm. We loved seeing and feeding all the animals. We are looking forward to the Swedish Cottage Marionette Theater and Queens Botanical Garden. We had a terrific visit from Officer McGruff to learn all about safety. Please be sure to join us for our end-of-the-year picnic on June 4 and our Moving-Up Ceremony on June 25th. We have had a wonderful year and wish everyone the best of luck in Kindergarten. Enjoy your summer

Kindergarten

We are busy decorating our rooms with butterflies and flowers to celebrate spring. We also are listening to poems by Langston Hughes, Eric Carle, and other poets and authors. Did you know that poems do not have to rhyme? In math, we are learning about many different shapes-triangles, squares, hexagons, trapezoids, and the rhombus! We hope everyone has a happy and healthy summer!

1st Grade

Our grade has been working hard at preparing for second grade! We also enjoyed working in the garden and cleaning it up. We're all looking forward to our trip to the Rufus King Manor. We've learned a lot about Colonial times and are we glad we live in the year 2003! All of us enjoyed writing our Kindness Week poems! We're also proud of the number of reading logs we have! Wow! During the summer we plan to read more and more! We will even join the library! Most of us can count money and buy things at the store.

We'd like to thank all the cluster teachers for helping us and making learning fun! We'd also like to thank Mrs. Linda Green and Ms. Patricia Cooper for their support and for making our school a great one!

Have a safe, joyful and exciting summer!

2nd Grade

The second grade school year is coming to a close. Looking back, the children have grown both academically and socially.

It's amazing how far many of the children have come along:

they can engage in deep conversation around a book
they have developed tastes for certain authors and genre
they have developed their science investigation skills
they have increased their understanding of how the world works.

With all this and more we are confident that they will meet the challenges of third grade. We wish you a healthy, happy and safe summer. Remember to visit the library often!

3rd Grade

The City Wide Reading and Math tests are behind us right now, but Grade 3 continues to do review and enhancement work in both content areas, and to do lots of reading; we want to have a good headstart next year!

We seem to have waved good-bye to Old Man Winter and we are delighted to be able to go outside at lunchtime, and to visit our beautiful garden.

We are looking forward to our visit to the Queens Botanical Garden, learning new information about plants and animals and the importance of protecting our environment.

4th Grade

This school year went by really quickly for the fourth grade. We can't believe it's almost over.

Our Macbeth presentation was a huge success! We were very proud of all our fabulous actors and actresses. The teachers performed beautifully too in Act 4. Everyone enjoyed participating in the carnival and in Acts of Kindness Week. Helping others gives you a good feeling.

All our students worked hard this school year and showed tremendous growth in all academic areas. We encourage lots of reading for every child this summer. We hope both parents and children have a relaxing and enjoyable summer vacation!

5th Grade

This year will be the final year for the fifth graders at P.S. 175. It has been an exciting year in which the students tried to improve their reading, math, and writing skills so they will be ready for Junior High School. As a reward for their achievements, the fifth grade will participate in the end-of-the-year activities, which will include a picnic, a Broadway show, a dance, and the graduation. The picnic will take place at Forest Park, and the Broadway show is Phantom of the Opera. The dance will be at the Forest Hills Jewish Center, and the graduation will be at Halsey Junior High School.

The staff wishes all our graduates the best of luck, and they also wish everyone a happy and healthy summer.

Science

It has been a very successful year for all the young scientists at P.S. 175! We began the year with Life Science, discovered all the awesome areas of Physical Science and we will end our year exploring Earth Science.

I hope the students at P.S. 175 had as much fun doing science as I had teaching it. I think we all learned a lot about our scientific selves! I am happy to be a part of the lifelong learning that takes place at P.S. 175! I hope you all have a wonderful summer, and keep those science minds intact! See you next year!

Congratulations to our Young Scientists!
Several students from our school completed projects for the District 28 Science Fair. We would like to congratulate all of them on the fantastic job and amazing effort!

News From the T.A.G. Room

As I write this last column for Pen and Ink, I am thinking about all the children and all the families in our school and how lucky we are to be in a place where everyone cares about each other so much.

Since I began working at P.S. 175, it has been my experience that I only needed to ask for help and it has been there from students, parents and staff members who are ready to perform every kind of job!!!

This has been another wonderful year in T.A.G. and as in the past, I can tell you that I have learned so much from all of the children in my classes!

I wish for each of you a happy and healthy summer filled with sunshine and smiles.

Sincerely,
Mrs. Cannata

Library/Media Center

As we wind up the school year there are still some exciting happenings in the library. All grades continue to learn and grow through the magic of literature. The lower grades gather in the library's picture book section to enjoy new stories and discover old favorites. Grades three through five have learned much about using the Internet, books and reference materials to investigate various topics. Some of them have been experts on some very interesting topics like the history of fashion in America, tennis or stunt flying.

One of the highlights this year was our participation in the Ezra Jack Keats picture book making contest. Ezra Jack Keats is a famous author/illustrator who attended the New York City public schools. This contest is to honor him and encourage children to write and illustrate their own stories. All grades three and five students who visit the library worked on creating beautifully illustrated original picture books. It was hard to choose one from all the wonderful stories the children wrote. You can see them outside of the library.

After reviewing them carefully we chose the work of Camille Kasavan and Michael Pilosov of Class 5-304. They wrote a beautiful story called Jenny and Spring. They incorporated computer graphics with traditional illustration creating very innovative pictures. They were winners in the city-wide contest and received their awards on May 9, 2003. Their book is on display at the Donnell Library in Manhattan. Congratulations to them on a job well done. And congratulations to all the P.S. 175 students who worked hard this year and did wonderful work! It was wonderful working with them this school year.

Have a wonderful summer. Visit the library. Keep reading.

Physical Education

Our gym program has always been a lot of fun. We have always wanted our students to feel good about themselves while learning essential physical fitness, dance and sport skills. Our goal has always been to stress excellence and be one of the city's top gym programs.

One discovery we have made is how much fun it is to share learning and playing experiences. We have often tried different things, successfully experimenting in our own way, inventing dances and games. A partnership has always been there between teachers and students, inspiring us as we planned new rules, techniques and strategies in achieving our goals.

I will be retiring at the end of this school year. I'll truly miss P.S. 175 and all our students, parents, and teachers. I am so proud of all our students. Our gym program was truly special and filled with a spirit of joy. If I, in any way, was a special teacher it is because I taught special kids who were so easy to love.

I know that our students will continue to make our physical education program the best it can be in the coming years. I have great respect for our school leadership and teachers. I am certain that the best teacher will be selected to head our physical education program. That teacher deserves our best effort and support. I am positive that the physical education partnership between teacher and students will continue and that our program will do well over the coming years.

I will do my best to stay in touch with as many people and families as I can. Wishing everyone a wonderful summer and a future filled with lots and lots of happiness.

Performing Arts

I stand up and applaud all the students of P.S. 175. It has been a fabulous year. We have had so many incredible performances. It was a pleasure working with Claudia Diamond on the Veteran's Day Assembly. The first graders did a great job on their Acts of Kindness assembly program and a special "thank you" to Jeanette Savastono. The carnival brought in lots of money for Homes for the Homeless. It was a very profitable event in more ways than one. Also, Ms. Levinson's children finished off the show with a wonderful song. My second graders outdid themselves in their fable puppet show. Thank you Ms. Ravinsky for working with the children on the puppets. The children worked hard and the moral of the story is that if you work hard it pays off!

William Shakespeare has really made his mark on fourth and fifth graders in our school. Macbeth was a fabulous performance and I am very proud of all of you. I am so glad that we have another opportunity to work together next year in another Shakespeare production. My fifth graders were so phenomenal in Romeo and Juliet. You all could have been on Broadway. You made me sooooooooo proud and you proved that ten- and eleven-year-olds can achieve anything if they set their minds to it. Good luck in sixth grade and I hope you remember your time on the stage forever.

Lastly, thanks to all the staff members who have supported me this year in all my endeavors. We all have the same goal in mind and that is the children's well-being and education. The making of the costumes, the rehearsals, and the scenery would not have happened without your help. I will miss so many of you that are leaving P.S. 175 and I wish you all the luck in the world on your retirement. A very special "thank you" to Randi Cannata. I will miss you with all my heart!

I wish everyone a wonderful summer and I will see you in September.

Love,
Barbara Bialek

Art

As I write this article, we are hard at work preparing for the P.S. 175 Art Fair. Every student in the school is eligible to display their work. We hope that all parents will sign the release forms for the sale of the children's artwork. Artwork will be for sale on May 29th and June 10th. All proceeds from the sale will be used by teachers to buy classroom supplies. Thanks to Ms. Wielstein for being instrumental in the development of this project.

All the classes are currently involved with learning new techniques and experimenting with water color painting. Many classes have done flower paintings, and paintings of their classmates in action poses. Grades 1, 2 and 3 experimented with drawing on wet paper to create cat drawings. Early childhood classes are painting underwater scenes.

This has been a great year for art at P.S. 175. The art room gave students the opportunity to experiment with new projects and materials.

I look forward to seeing everyone at the Art Fair. Have a healthy and relaxing summer vacation!

SETTS (Resource Room)

As another successful school year comes to an end, we want to thank the children for their hard work. The success of our program is accomplished through the support of our administration, teachers, and parents. Thank you all for your cooperation and support throughout the year.

It is always sad to have to say good-bye to our fifth graders. We wish you much success and luck, graduates, in everything you do.

This year we say good-bye to a long list of retirees. It is a bittersweet good-bye to all of you. Best wishes as you leave the P.S. 175Q family. You will be sorely missed.

We wish all of you a much needed summer vacation. Marlene King

ESL

This year is moving faster and faster . . . soon we will be moving on to the next grade, maybe to a new school. We have learned a lot this year and had fun in our class. We have made new friends and kept old friends busy with our lives. We have watched our brothers and sisters grown and learn. We welcomed new members of the family and enjoyed special time with our family who have joined us or visited us this year. We have appreciated our parents and grandparents and the new lives we have made in the USA.

Summer is a time for renewal and a time to catch up on stuff we can't enjoy when we are in school. Some students will go to summer school part of the day but it will be more relaxed and hopefully an opportunity to continue learning English and about our new culture and country. Hopefully all children will use their summer time to read daily and enrich their lives with experiences and vacations.

Thanks to all students and parents for a successful year and best wish wishes for a safe and healthy summer vacation.
